::: DESCRIPTION :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
this is a toy keyboard called "my music maker" (
see photo at the bottom of this page ) that i sat
down with and decided to use to make a PARASITE tutorial
and ended up going a little overboard. you can see
some of the bending process HERE
this original toy has no controls what so ever. you
just plug in a battery and the keys are the "on" switch.
the first couple of keys played in the first sample
represent the only sound it made, and the board is
just a black blob, a single transistor, a couple caps
and resistor or two. not much to work with. so i added
a bend to control the pitch. some touch contacts, a
sustain and wet nasty bend toggle, power switches,
output jack and the SHIVER.
the results were just ok, the modulation range was
pretty weak, i wasn't that impressed and then i realized
that i fucked up. the pot range for the pitch was 1M
but the shiver is only 200k. i should have used a QUIVER.
so i gave it some thought and played around with it
and the starve pot was the coolest thing about it other
then the percussion. so i took a toggle and made the
shiver switchable so you can have it modulate the pitch
or starve pot. now its working the way i had intended.
the 95% of the modulation you hear it the samples is
the shiver starving the power to the keyboard and its
effect on the pitch and sound.
::: CONTROLS :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
the knobs starting from the bottom left up are, main
pitch pot, shiver rate pot, shiver shape pot ( tri
to sine), shiver depth pot, toggle bend switch that
adds a nasty wet sloppy analog sound to the main sound
that is actually really cool, then two touch contacts
that work with the starve pot on the right, as you
turn the starve pot down and you touch one of the two
contacts it produces a synth drum pattern and the starve
pot slowly changes the patterns in a way that will
allow you to recreate the same changes later so you
can possible make drum patterns. one contact is higher
pitch and the other is lower. and then the toggle on
the far right is a sustain that will make each note
played last a lot longer but it does end abruptly,
you can re-strike the keys and get a constant tone
though. on the far left is a 1/4" output jack
and then on the back are two NES power switches and
a bright blue LED. the one nearest the LED is the main
power and the other is the shiver power. in the second
to last photo you can see the toggle to mod the starve
that i added last minute
the finish ended up kind of baby / sky blue and matte
black. i found some old star stickers and decided to
use them. after finishing everything i did a few clear
coats to protect all.
::: SAMPLES
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
these samples are just me hitting record
and messing around in an attempt the show you the full
range of options. most are from one single pass that
i just cut up into roughly 2 minute segments and a
couple are from before i added the starve modulation
and show of the percussion sounds a little. no effects
or editing was done to anything at all. people that
make samples with tons of reverb or delay are fucking
morons that are trying to hide or exaggerate their
results.
